This recipe is perfect for those who crave something sweet for breakfast, brunch or even a fun dessert!

What Makes Yemeni-Inspired Waffles So Special?

  1. Flavorful Twist: Imagine your classic waffle with the a twist! These waffles are infused with nigella seeds and samn (ghee). Nigella seeds add a subtle taste to this recipe. Samn brings a rich buttery depth that echoes the flavors found in traditional Yemeni baked goods like sabaya or ka’ak. And to complete the experience, drizzle with some honey! This perfectly compliments the nigella seeds and the samn.
  2. Inspired by Yemeni Baked Goods: Many traditional Yemeni baked goods feature ingredients like ghee, nigella seeds, and honey. These ingredients are known for their rich flavors and aromatic qualities. I incorporated these elements into this recipe to bring a touch of Yemeni flavors to each bite.
  3. Honey: A Sweet Cultural Touch: In Yemeni Culture, honey is not just a sweetener. It is a cherished ingredient deeply embedded in the food traditions. Honey is often used in a variety of Yemeni dishes, symbolizing hospitality and warmth. Its rich, floral sweetness enhances many buttery baked goods making it a perfect match for these waffles.
  4. Versatile and Fun: These waffles are not just a breakfast option, they are also great for brunch or a dessert. Serve them with a variety of toppings from fresh fruit or nuts. You can also keep it simple with the drizzle of honey for an authentic touch!

Tips for the Perfect Waffle

  • Don’t Over mix: Mixing the batter until just combined helps keep the waffles light and airy. Over mixing can lead to dense waffles.
  • Keep Waffles Crisp: If you’re making a batch, keep the waffles warm in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place it in a pre-heated oven at 200°F. Keep them warm until you are ready to serve.
  • Get creative with toppings: Try different toppings to compliment the flavors. From fresh fruit such as sliced bananas or nuts for a crunchy topping!
