Dutch Apple Pie

There’s something about a good Dutch Apple pie that just hits all the right notes – tender, cinnamon-spiced apples, a buttery pie crust, and that dreamy, crumbly streusel topping. Seriously, what could be better? This pie is easy to make, and the best part? It’s a no-fuss recipe that doesn’t require pre-cooking the filling (unless you want to, of course). Trust me, you’ll be in dessert heaven with every bite.

Best Apples for Dutch Apple Pie

When it comes to making Dutch Apple Pie, the type of apples you choose is important. You want apples that hold their shape while baking, have just the right amount of sweetness, and are perfectly balanced with a little tartness.

I recommend using a mix of tart and sweet apples for best flavor and texture. I like to mix Granny Smith with a sweet apple such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Pink Lady! In this recipe, I used 3 large Granny smith and 2 large Pink Lady apples.

Ingredients for Dutch Apple Pie

Pie Crust:

  • 1 homemade or store bought 9 inch pie crust

For the Pie filling:

  • 5-6 large apples, peeled and cored (I used a mixture of Granny Smith, and Pink Lady)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Streusel Topping:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions:

Blind Bake Your Pie Crust: Let’s give the crust a quick little bake. First, roll out your dough and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Blind baking is essential here – it helps your crust stay crisp under the juicy apple filling. Prick the bottom with a fork, line it with parchment paper, and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake at 375°F for 10-15 minutes, then let it cool. Once cooled, carefully remove the weights and parchment paper.

Prepare the Streusel Topping: In a medium size bowl, mix together the all purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and melted butter. Mix until you get a crumbly texture. Allow it to chill in the fridge until you prepare the apple filling.

Make the Apple Filling: Peel, core, and slice your apples nice and thin (about 1/4 inch thick). In a large bowl, toss the apples slices with the granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, vanilla, all purpose flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and salt. Toss it all together until the apples are evenly coated. That’s it!

Assemble the Pie: Once your pie crust is cool, pour the apple filling into the crust and even it as much as possible. Then, generously sprinkle the streusel topping over the apples. Don’t be shy, pile it on!

Bake the Pie: Place the pie into the a preheated oven and bake it at 350°F for 50-60 minutes. You will see the streusel will develop a golden color, and the juices from the apples will begin to bubble a bit.

Let it Cool and Serve: Once your pie is out of the oven, let it cool for at least an 1-2 hours so that the filling can set. Then slice it up and serve with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream (because why not?).

Tips for A Delicious Dutch Apple Pie

  • Don’t skip blind baking your crust! It’s a extra step but worth it!
  • Want a crispier streusel topping? Add a sprinkle of oats or chopped nuts to the streusel for more crunch.
  • When adding the streusel topping, don’t just sprinkle it on. For extra texture and that perfect, rustic look, squeeze and crumble the streusel in your fingers as you apply it. This will give you those beautiful, golden clumps that bake into a crispy buttery topping.
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel! (You’ll thank me later!)
